I've wanted a GPS unit for years, but never broke down and bought one. I finally decided I needed something to motivate me to get out of the house. I could use the exercise. My dog could use the exercise. Everybody wins.
As the title of this posting indicates, I picked up a Garmin eTrex Legend Cx. What sold me on this model was:
- 64MB of flash memory (microSD)
- 256 Color (monochrome is for the color blind)
- Navigation Capabilities
- 30+ hours of battery life of 2 AA's.
- The fact that I got the salesperson to knock $100 off the price
The package came with:
- City Navigator NT software - A necessity if you want the device to show maps
- Vehicle Window Mount - Awesome for using the unit for vehicle navigation
- USB Cable - Didn't really need this
- 12v Car Charger - Only really need this for extended driving
Sadly, tiny handheld units like this don't work well in downtown areas with large buildings. I guess the signal starts bouncing around because it might suddenly think I'm 100 feet from where I am and jump me right back. Luckily, Denver does not have much in the way of tall buildings.
My main purpose for this device is to participate in Geocaching. I've known about it for years, but never had access to a GPS to try it out. I'm excited to go out and see what I can find. I plan to start in my neighborhood and expand out to the various parks and reserves in the area. Metro Denver is littered with hiking/biking trails and parks, which seem to be very popular spots for Geocachers. Perhaps I'll keep a log of my finds on this blog.
